E30A EXAM ADVICE
- The exam is, like all other exams in Literatures in English, 2 hours in
length. You are required to answer TWO (2) questions in
all.
- The poetry discussed in Module I
will not be tested again since it was examined by the term paper; the exam will therefore focus on the material covered in Modules II and III.
- Some years, as revealed by the past exam
papers, the exam paper is divided into TWO
(2) sections. However, the exam paper
this year is not divided into any sections.
- Sometimes questions are comparative in that they may ask you to
compare two poets of your choice, while at other times questions may zero in
on a single poet.
- In order to prepare for the exam, you should:
- carefully read and reread the poetry of the poets in question;
- identify the topics covered each week by consulting the Seminar
Questions (Module II;
Module III): nothing will appear on the exam which we have not discussed in some detail
in the seminars;
- do not prepare merely two topics: prepare at least three
or, better yet, four areas to give your self an alternative(s) if your
first choices do not appear on the exam;
- consult the appropriate Seminar Notes for overviews of the life and
poetry of specific poets;
- carefully study the Criticisms recommended;
- consult copies of past exam papers to become acquainted with
the types of questions which may be asked of you;
- try to anticipate the questions that may come by listening to hints
given in class (of course, to do so you would need to attend regularly!)
and to prepare the
answers.
