LITS3001 EXAM ADVICE 2004-2005

  1. The exam is 2 hours in length.  You must answer TWO essay-type questions, chosen from a total of 6.
  2. The exam is based on Module 2, though you may also draw on relevant material from Module 1.
  3. There will be:
    1. one question on Modernist poetry in general;
    2. one question on the World War I poets;
    3. one question on Imagist poetry;
    4. two questions on Eliot's poetry; and
    5. one question on the poetry of Langston Hughes.
  4. You should not ignore any theoretical essays which we discussed in conjunction with the poetry.  For example,
    1. we discussed Hulme's "Romanticism and Classicism" for its rejection of Romanticism and its embrace of (neo-)Classical values;
    2. we discussed Pound's "A Retrospect" in relation to Imagism in general and the poetry of Pound and Williams in particular;
    3. we discussed Eliot's "Tradition and the Individual Talent," "Hamlet and his Problems," and "The Metaphysical Poets" in relation to his poetry; and
    4. we discussed the views of W. B. Du Bois on the plight of the African American as well as his famous "Negro Art and Propaganda" in relation to the poetry of Langston Hughes.
  5. In preparing for the exam, regular attendance at seminars is an advantage, and vice versa.
