Answer ONE (1) of the following questions:

1. Discuss the role played by TWO of the following concepts in the poetry of either Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Rimbaud or Verlaine:
   • Symbolism;
   • Aestheticism;
   • Decadence;
   • Impressionism.
2. "Much turn of the century poetry, whether in English or French, is Janus-faced, looking towards both the past and the future."  Discuss the dialectic of tradition and innovation with reference to TWO poets studied.
3. Is Yeats a Romantic or Modernist poet?  Answer with close reference to his poetry.
4. Discuss the role of symbolism in Yeats' poetry.
5. In what ways are Yeats' last poems different from his earlier work?
6. Perform a close reading of a poem by one of the poets studied but not discussed in class and say what, if anything, you find to be characteristically 'Modernist' about it.
