view to getting a handle on some important background
material necessary for grasping Althusser;
On Tuesday October 26, we will
return to Althusser's "Contradiction and Overdetermination";
On Wednesday October 27, 9-10.30 am (the first make-up
class, Old Bruce St. John Conference Room), we will examine Althusser's "Ideology and Ideological
State Apparatuses";
On Thursday October 28, we will
study Althusser's Reading Capital: Part 1;
On Tuesday November 2, we will
examine Althusser's "A Letter on Art" and Eagleton's "Towards a
Science of the Text";
On Thursday November 4, we will study
Hall's "Race, Articulation and Societies Structured in Dominance";
On Tuesday November 9, we will
examine Bhabha's "Representation and the Colonial Text";
Module 3:
Foucauldian Discourse Theory
On Thursday November 11, we will study Foucault's
Archaeology of Knowledge;
On Monday November 15 (the second
make-up class, 9-10.30 am in the Old Bruce St. John Conference
Room), we will continue to study Foucault's
Archaeology of Knowledge;
On Tuesday November 16, we will
study Foucault's "What is an Author?";
On Thursday November 18, we will
study Foucault's "Nietzsche, Genealogy, History";
On Monday November 22 (the third
make-up class, 9-10.30 am in the Old Bruce St. John Conference
Room), we will study Greenblatt's "Towards a Poetics of Culture";
On Tuesday November 23, we will
study Said's "Secular Criticism"; and
On Thursday November 25, we will
study Said's Orientalism.
