SEMESTER I, 2010-2011

The term paper is based on Module One: Dialogism (the Bakhtin Circle)

The Final Exam will be based on Modules Two and Three.

Answer ONE (1) of the following questions:

In your answer, you should refer closely to the primary source(s) by the theorist(s) in question.

1.    In what ways might Saussurean linguistics be described as "revolutionary"?  Answer by comparing Saussure's views with those of at least ONE predecessor (e.g. Plato, Aristotle, Locke, Herder, Humboldt, Vossler).

2.    Would you agree that Part II of Volosinov's Marxism and the Philosophy of Language "offers a dialectical critique of both Romantic and Structuralist views on language"?  Answer by comparing Volosinov's concept of discourse with the views of ONE (neo-)Romantic theorist (e.g. Herder, Humboldt, Vossler) and Saussure.

3.    "Part I of Volosinov's Marxism and the Philosophy of Language offers a sociological model of the mind that is at odds with the naturalistic temper of modern psychology."  Discuss.

4.    What light, if any, does Bakhtin's "The Problem of Speech Genres" shed on his "Discourse in the Novel"?

5.    Bakhtin's "Discourse in the Novel" "is informed by a series of binary oppositions: dialogism versus monologism, heteroglossia versus univocality, anarchy versus hegemony, the masses versus the ruling classes, popular forms of cultural expression versus canonical, the novel versus poetry, and so on."  Do you agree?

6.    Discuss the "African American dialogue with Bakhtin" (Dale E. Peterson) with respect to Gates' The Signifying Monkey.
